Kintamani tour: full-day program, pickup time 10:00. Excursion to the middle of Bali.
Route: Ubud – Monkeyforest, Tegallalang – rice-terraces, Kintamani - overlook to the Batur lake and the Batur volcano, Kintamani coffee plantation & spice garden, Tirta Empul – the holy springs, Gunung Kawi - Bali’s oldest and largest ancient monument.
First we check the sacred Monkey Forest in Ubud, this cool and dense piece of jungle houses three holy temples. The sanctuary is inhabited by the grey-haired and long-tailed Balinese macaques. We can walk around, feed the monkeys with ripe bananas and watch their everyday life at the forest temple.
Our next stop at the well maintained terraced rice fields of Tegallalang village, which is a unique place because of its breath-taking panorama. These rice terraces that follow the natural contours of the hills are stunningly picturesque and famous sence of many foreign movies even. The Balinese emerald-green rice terraces go back over 2,000 years when hard-working farmers with primitive hand tools began carving the stepped terraces out of steep hill sides. Generation after generation has extended and kept them in meticulous shape out of necessity - rice is the staple food of the islanders.
We keep going up on the hills until we arrive at Kintamani village, an overlook to the spectacular caldera that contains the cone of the Batur volcano (1717m) and its explosion lake. The view from here is truly wonderful a rare chance of a lifetime to see a volcano fully in its magnificent state. You can have a meal in a nice restaurant nearby while admiring the panorama.
After a short ride we stop by at a coffee plantation & spice garden which is on 900-1200 meters above sea level where you can experience how the famous Bali coffee is processed, roasted and brewed by the local farmers. You can also taste the freshly made Bali coffee, hot chocolate, ginseng coffee, ginger tea or lemongrass tea on the spot. And if you're a real gourmand you can try the Kopi Luwak also known as the Civet Coffee which is considered one of the finest and most expensive coffees in the world. It is made from coffee cherries which have been eaten by and passed through the digestive track of the Asian Palm Civet (paradoxorus hermaphroditus). After collected, the beans are processed hygienically, and given only a medium roast so as to not destroy the complex flavors that develop trough the process. This Kopi Luwak process takes place only on island of Bali, Java and Sumatra in the Indonesian Archipelago. Producing no more than 300 Kg per year and distributed throughout the world. After drinking your coffee you can have a look on the civets sleeping under the trees in the spice garden.
The last stop of the day is the holy springs of Tirta Empul. Founded in 962, and restored in the late 1960s, the springs are believed to have strong spiritual almost magical powers. The actual springs bubble up into a large, crystal-clear tank within the temple and gush out through waterspouts into a bathing pool. Overlooking Tirta Empul springs is the ex-president’s and dictator’s palace, the Istana Negara. It was designed by Soekarno himself. It is simply a wonderful place.
Back to the hotel around 19:00. |

Elephant Ride: half-day program, pick up time 9:30.
Pass through unworldly beauty – natural rice paddies, quaint Balinese villages, temples and local markets – on the scenic drive to Bali Elephant Camp, located in the historic village of Carangsari, birth place of Bali’s national hero ‘Ngurah Rai’ and only a short distance from the Sangeh monkey forest. Bali Elephant Camp is situated between the rice paddies, jungle, and the Ayung River (where we also do white water rafting) and is one of the most natural places in Bali.
Our elephants come from Sumatra, and as part of our efforts to conserve this magnificent species, we’d like you to learn more about them, go trekking and experience life with our incredible elephants! By riding our elephants you help us help other elephants in Sumatra by providing funds for food and land to make sure their homes remain protected. After enjoying the drive, be welcomed to Bali Elephant Camp with a refreshing welcome drink at the ‘Trunk’n’Mahout’ valley-view café. Watch the elephants enjoy their morning or afternoon bath and then meet our Head Mahout to learn about the daily life of a Sumatran elephant as the elephants get saddled-up for the ‘Explorer’ or ‘Adventurer’ treks. Want to see a big appetite? Check out the Elephant lunchtime.
